In the 19th century, all women were expected to be able to sew.  Her skills clothed her entire family.  The tools needed to accomplish this task were extremely important and eventually were worn as a fashion accessory.  This also made it very easy for the Victorian lady to do needlework anywhere; an acceptable pastime for young girls as well as adults.

The Chatelaine, as it was called, was very decorative and was most often worn at the waistband of a the skirt or worn on a belt around the waist.  The common tools: scissors, tape measure, thimble, needle case, and pincushion, were suspended by chains.

Original chatelaines can still be found, but are very expensive.  Our chatelaines and attachments are faithful copies of Victorian originals and all cases are of sterling silver.
